As the millennial I am, you already had me when I read this was inspired by Dexter and Criminal Minds.
This psychological urban fantasy follows Iris Young, a top FBI graduate on track to become the youngest special agent ever. But when a serial killer turns her city into his playground, everything changes. As she investigates, it becomes clear the killer isn’t just leaving bodies behind… he’s leaving messages for her. And worse: he seems to know her darkest secret.
The story felt incredibly unique, nothing like anything I’ve read before. It kept me intrigued the entire time.
It’s also the first fantasy book I’ve read where romance isn’t a main focus, and to my surprise… I didn’t mind that at all.
Iris Young is a complicated main character, and because we’re in her head, you really understand why. This is definitely not a fairytale kind of book. The issues within her world are raw and present, but what I loved most is how clearly it reflects issues from our own world too.
And I have to say… as someone who has had the same girlfriends for over 20+ years, I’m always a sucker for a strong best friend dynamic. The friendship between Iris and Charlie is golden. It’s real, deep, and a little flawed because of Iris’ secrets, but that’s exactly what makes it so good.
This is the first book in the The Sins of the Half Blood trilogy, and I honestly can’t wait for the second book. That ending? A real cliffhanger. I’m fully on the edge of my seat.
The only thing I struggled with a little were the time jumps. But honestly… that might just be on me. I tend to jump straight into chapters without reading the little headings, so that’s probably a me problem.
